Person-centred care for equity in cancer screening
My research focuses on a person-centered perspective in the context of cancer screening. The main goal is to strengthen health literacy related to cancer screening among individuals in society, promote informed decision-making, and foster partnerships in the development of next-generation cancer screening, thereby advancing equity in screening, health autonomy, and social justice (Figure 1, WP1-3).
Some projects focus on validating the psychometric properties of measures of patient-reported outcomes. In addition, my research involves the development and validation of medical imaging methods to improve diagnostics and patient rehabilitation care.
My research focuses on a person-centered perspective in the context of cancer screening, and it is funded by the Swedish Cancer Society, the Swedish Prostate Cancer Federation, the Malmö General Hospital Cancer Foundation, and Skåne University Hospital Foundations and Donations.
Implications for practice in health care: While artificial intelligence (AI) and precision medicine are powerful tools, they should not be grounded solely in a biomedical perspective. The use of AI systems introduces new demands on healthcare, including from the patient’s perspective. A person-centered approach provides the essential ethical foundation, particularly given the existing gap between the Patient Act and patients’ rights to person-centered care, and its implementation in healthcare. Accordingly, person-centered care in cancer diagnostics has the potential to generate evidence for quality standards for person-centered care in cancer screening. The individual’s perspective on cancer screening is expected to support the development of person-centered decision in cancer screening, in order to promote informed decision-making on participation.
Furthermore, person-reported perspectives on future cancer screening research intends to inform preventive strategies and recommendations for new screening programs. In addition, the project results are expected to strengthen evidence-based practice among radiographers in patient care and in the provision of person-centered radiography.
The findings from my research on the psychometric properties of measurement tools, as well as the evaluation of new diagnostic imaging methodologies, are expected to contribute to the standardization of methods in cancer diagnostics.
