Person Centred Decision Aid for the Next Generation of Screening

Overall Aim:
The overarching aim of the dissertation project is to develop a person-centred decision aid to support women in making informed decisions about participation in future breast cancer screening in Sweden. Emerging innovations such as artificial intelligence, new diagnostic methods, and research on individualised cancer screening are expected to significantly impact future screening practices, placing increased demands on public health communication.

Project Structure:
The research project consists of four studies using a range of methodologies: qualitative content analysis, validation studies, and a randomised controlled trial (RCT). Study participants will include women of screening age as well as those outside the current screening target group, representing both native Swedish and culturally diverse populations. Recruitment will be conducted through breast cancer centers across Sweden and random sampling from the national population registry.

Study I:
A qualitative focus group study exploring women’s awareness of innovations in breast cancer screening and their informational needs. The study will be conducted by the PhD candidate in collaboration with a patient representative and a multidisciplinary research team (including supervisors, a psychologist, educator, statistician, and engineer). Findings are expected to inform the development of a preliminary decision aid.

Study II:
A multimethod study aimed at validating, testing, and refining the preliminary decision aid. This will include interviews with both target users and breast cancer screening professionals to assess the content and relevance of the information. The results will contribute to the development of clear, accessible, and educational content to enhance knowledge and awareness among women.

Study III:
A psychometric study to culturally adapt and validate an international questionnaire for the Swedish context. This instrument will be used to assess the effects of the decision aid on women’s screening-related decision-making. Collaboration will include a postdoctoral researcher from the University of Gothenburg and a fellow PhD student at Lund University, working within lung and prostate cancer screening, respectively, to broaden applicability.

Study IV:
A randomised controlled trial evaluating the impact of the decision aid on satisfaction with information, awareness of future breast cancer screening options, and the ability to make an informed choice about participation.
